Florida doesn’t just have beautiful sandy beaches. It also has sandy soil, particularly in the Jacksonville region. Understanding how sandy soil behaves is critical to keeping your Florida lawn and garden healthy.

What is Sandy Soil?

As the name implies, sandy soil is earth with a high proportion of sand, aka tiny, weathered rock pieces. Sandy soil tends to be fairly loose and gritty, and does not hold water as well as more absorbent soil types.

Sandy soil is also well-aerated, meaning that it has plentiful pockets of air in between soil particles. These spaces facilitate quick drainage but also lead to poor nutrient retention.

How Do Heavy Rains Affect Sandy Soil?

Heavy or frequent rainfall can cause various issues for sandy soil. Of particular concern are soil retention and healthy moisture levels.

Easy Erosion

Even though sandy soil is quick-draining, it can still get waterlogged during heavy rainfall. When the ground can’t absorb any more water, that water stays on the surface and becomes runoff that can easily erode the top layer of soil. Over time, ongoing erosion can compromise soil quality and vegetation health.

Uneven Moisture Levels

During heavy rain, sandy soil can become saturated. If there’s enough precipitation, even the fastest-draining soil can be overwhelmed, particularly if it rains over multiple days.

This sudden influx of water can, in turn, overwhelm plant life. Florida plants, trees, and grass may not be accustomed to so much available moisture since water usually drains away quickly. When the rains stop and the remaining water does drain, plants face another reversal—they had too much water for a time, and now there’s almost no surface water available.

These fluctuating moisture levels can put stress on grass, trees, flowers, and shrubs. They may not be able to adapt quickly enough, meaning they can decline or even die if subjected to too many changes in too short a time.

How to Work With Sandy Soil

Even though sandy soil has some challenges, you can still work with it to enjoy a beautiful lawn and garden in Florida. Key steps to take include:

  • Use fertiizers or compost to ensure plants get necessary nutrients
  • Prioritize plants that can thrive in drier soil
  • Water regularly, focusing on longer waterings at less frequent intervals—this encourages root systems to seek out water deeper down rather than only relying on surface water
  • Install drainage to help standardize soil moisture across seasons

Sandy Soil Drainage Solutions

French drains are among the best drainage solutions for minimizing erosion and preserving plant health in sandy soil. In simple terms, French drains are perforated pipes installed underground to collect and channel water away from your property.

During heavy rains, French drains help prevent oversaturation of sandy soil. As rain falls and soaks into the soil, French drains collect it so it drains away instead of saturating the ground. Since the soil can continue to absorb water, you avoid erosion caused by runoff and help the soil maintain a consistent moisture level.
